Chapter 20

CRIME NEVER TAKES A day off, but I do. Or I try to. The next morning being Saturday, it seemed like a good day to rest. After all, I’d been through a lot in the past week.

I’d witnessed a gruesome sight of twenty or more crows writhing in death throes, been swarmed by hundreds of their grieving relatives, witnessed two murders, been caught in a tough spot twice by some bad guys and had to shoot my way out of said tough spots, and almost became a victim of a crazed killer trying to stab me with one of the deadliest poisons in the world.

Brett had called and I suggested we put things off until Sunday. I didn’t tell him about my near-death experience. Some things in a relationship are best left unsaid. At least, when someone has tried to kill you and this is to be expected because it’s part of the job. I didn’t want to give him a reason for not wanting me to be a P.I. I knew the words would come, but I would put it off as long as I could.

I was able to have a nice leisurely day off until about three p.m. I spent the morning and early afternoon cleaning house, doing laundry, and I watched an old mystery movie featuring William Powell and Myrna Loy. Those two kill me.

I tried to read a police procedural to see if anything new has happened in the world of policing. Body cameras and citizens taking videos during arrests seemed to be the topic of the day. After a while, I was bored. Nothing to do on a Saturday afternoon.

I decided to call Steve and see if he had found John Stokely and arrested him. As it turned out he had and had.

“We just booked him,” Steve said. “Unfortunately, not before he killed again.”

“Oh no. Who was it this time?” My boredom had quickly become panic when the realization of my near-death experience the night before became more real. It could have been me.

“We got called out shortly before the lunch hour,” Steve said. “The victim was the owner of Crazy Greek Deli in Ankeny Alley, one Markos Pagonis.”

“I interviewed him a few days ago. He claimed John Stokely was the person responsible for killing the crows in Ankeny Alley.”

“We think he was injected with tetrodotoxin. We’re still awaiting the lab results. By the way, the syringe we recovered from your attack last night was definitely tetrodotoxin. Enough to kill a horse. No fingerprints though.”

“Where are you?” I asked.

“Booking facility at the Justice Center,” he said.

“Should I feel safer?”

“I think so. A witness said he saw someone fitting Stokely’s description enter a side door to the deli. Pagonis was seen at the cannabis store around ten a.m. in a heated argument with Stokely. No one knows what they were arguing about and Stokely isn’t talking. But it was enough to get a search warrant and guess what we turned up?”

“Tetrodotoxin?” I asked.

“Yeah. We found three vials of the stuff and a box of syringes.
